Short construction phase for fish feed project in Iceland

Context

Iceland has long been a blind spot for SCE. Until a meeting and some initial sketches at the Victam fair in Cologne, Germany, changed all that. The contact with Laxa soon led to the realisation of an all-in project for SCE.

The animal feed industry in Iceland is not an extensive market and focuses mainly on fishing. Laxa produces fish feed and was looking for a system to easily load trucks with the feed pellets. "It was a limited tonnage, but they wanted to go for automation," says area sales manager Koen Verbrugge. “There are not many specialised companies that Icelandic feed mills can call upon. That is why they called on a European partner."

Fragility

SCE joined forces with its partners to provide the necessary machinery and worked out a 3D model that could be fully produced and shipped to the town of Akureyri. Apart from the foundation and electricity works, the entire project was in the hands of the Belgian silo builder. From assembly to the outer shell. "We installed a silo block with 10 cells totalling 630 m³. Chain conveyors bring the pellets from the production hall to the right silo compartment," explains Koen. "An important point of attention during the entire transport phase is that the fish pellets must not break. This creates dust, which in turn lays a film on the water. To avoid flow problems, we used smooth wall silos, our patented butterfly hoppers combined with insulated wall panels which prevent the product from sticking to the inner walls."

Thorough preparation

SCE's engineering and preparation proved crucial to the realisation. Due to the weather conditions in Iceland, the time frame for a smooth installation was limited. "Once the ground had defrosted, the foundations were cast. We arrived on site in June and completed the installation by the end of September," says Koen. "We were only able to achieve this short construction phase because of our thorough preparation and by acting as the central contact point for this project.”
