Context

MOWI, a global leader in salmon farming and processing, partnered with SCE to build a second specialised salmon feed factory in Scotland. The new facility supports supply to salmon farms in Ireland, Scotland, Norway, and the Faroe Islands, and is equipped with the latest technologies, including a dedicated jetty.

Building on a unique site

After careful evaluation, MOWI selected an old quarry in Kyleakin, on the Isle of Skye, as the site for the new factory. Positioned just above sea level and surrounded by hills, the location helps reduce the visual impact of the 40-metre-high structure. The factory connects directly to the Atlantic Ocean via a converted jetty, allowing MOWI’s sea-going vessels to load feed for offshore salmon farms.

Full-Scale construction in 18 months

SCE built the facility in just 18 months. The site includes a 40-metre-high unloading station for vessels and trucks, a 35-metre-high connecting bridge, 31 dosing silos, and 34 large bulk silos for finished products. Additionally, a warehouse with a floor area of 5,774 m² was developed to support the operation, which can handle up to 170,000 tonnes of fish feed annually.

Specialised silos with butterfly hoppers

The square silos in the new factory are equipped with SCE’s advanced butterfly hoppers. These specially designed bulk silos use a combination of smooth and sheet pile walls to prevent pellet breakage and dust formation caused by heavy pressure. The butterfly hopper design ensures a complete and consistent outflow of product, contributing to the factory’s efficiency.

With a total investment of 110 million euros, the salmon feed factory is one of the most efficient and sustainable of its kind. For SCE, it stands out as one of the most prestigious projects ever delivered, reinforcing its position as a key partner for complex feed production facilities worldwide.
